The numbers were staggering, with over 30,000 pro-lifers in attendance. The cause was noble, fighting for the rights of the unborn children of America. All the while, the love and care for the human person shown at the 2010 Walk for Life in San Francisco was immense, to say the least.

Last Saturday, January 23, approximately 30 students from Saint Mary's College joined the throngs of pro-lifers from all over the West Coast to participate in the Sixth Annual West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco.

Students, parents, children, and everyone in between congregated in Justin Herman Plaza on Market Street before the walk commenced at 12 p.m. This year was made even more special when the Saint Mary's Respect Life Club was given the opportunity to carry the banner at the front and lead the walk.

Coordinated by club President, senior Maria Sitzmann, as well as Vice President Magdalena Rodriguez '10, the group of Gaels endured the rain and cold to stand up for those people in this world without a voice. This year's event proved to be even more successful than last year, as the club brought a greater number of students to the streets of San Francisco.

Of course there was some opposition, but pro-choice protesters were few and far between. Frankly who could blame their small numbers when faced with the massive crowds that filled the streets of San Francisco that day? Anyone who can find murder in this form to be an acceptable practice should really ask themselves the question posed on a fellow walker's shirt: Would it bother us more if they used guns?

If anything, the only thing lacking at this event was more representation from our campus. If we are to follow the Lasallian principle of Respect for All Persons, then these persons should be our chief priority.

As a Catholic, Lasallian institution, we should be proud to defend the rights of the unborn. Catholics and non-Catholics alike can come together to secure the basic right to exist. Hopefully next year will bring about even more eager participants in the Walk.
