While some may argue that the field of journalism is declining, Saint Mary's College is ready to launch a new generation of reporters.

Beginning next semester, the College will be offering a new program, the Robert W. Summers Scholarship Awards in Journalism.

These new scholarship awards are available thanks to the late Robert W. Summers, who was Chevron's Director of Public Affairs for the East Bay. Summers bequeathed $1 million to the school to assist students studying in the fields of communication and the health sciences. While Summers was not an alumnus of Saint Mary's, he supported the college's Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts traditions.

According to President Brother Ronald Gallagher, "[Summers] was impressed not only with the great education students receive here, but also the spiritual and social development they derive from our faculty and staff." The bequest falls in line with his concern for the youth of the Bay Area, and of Saint Mary's College in particular.

The scholarship created with this endowment will be for full-time undergraduate students interested in public relations, journalism, and the health sciences. However, students from all majors, as well as transfer students, are encouraged to apply. There are four scholarships of $2,000 each being awarded for the rest of the 2009-2010 academic year.

The application includes four parts. The first part consists of a brief statement explaining why the student's current program of study is preparing them to be a "citizen journalist" in media types such as print, broadcast, documentary film/video, still-photography, or Internet.

Second, the student must include a transcript that demonstrates they have a solid history of academic achievement at the college. First year students may provide a transcript from their high school instead. Third, students must supply a resume that includes relevant experience in the form of internships, student media, work or training sessions.

Finally, a portfolio of the student's non-fiction work should be included. For print media this can include news, sports or feature stories, or still photography; for broadcast this might include film/video documentaries, or a broadcast/cable television production; and for internet production this can be any blog or web design.

The application is due by December 11, 2009 and award recipients will be announced in February, 2010. For any more information regarding the scholarship opportunity students should contact Fr. Mike Russo.
