How do you inform a college community about health topics in an engaging fashion? A bingo game.

The College's Wellness Fair used the game as a way to spread awareness about diabetes and other pertinent health issues last Wednesday in Madigan Gym. The event served not just as a way to inform the community, but also as a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The bingo game had students, faculty, and visitors running around the gym to learn more about diabetes and about opportunities to stay healthy. The fair's 24 different booths were organized in a bingo grid, and participants were encouraged to visit as many as they could. Those who scored multiple bingos were awarded a free turkey courtesy of Sodexho.

The fair was important because college campus across the nation have students suffering from Type I and Type II diabetes, according to Tia Lillie, the College's coordinator of health promotion & education, and the event's organizer. People can resolve these problems by "becoming more active and staying healthy," Lillie said.

The different stations were run by a variety of individuals. For example, there were booths run by the Women's Resource Center, Counseling Center, Recreational Sports, Sodexho, and the ADA itself. There were also many stations which were run by students that taught how to stay in shape through exercises and stretching.

Lindsay Rango, an ADA Associate Manager, explained how the event helped promote advocacy about diabetes.

It coincides with the ADA's mission, which is "to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes," she said. Donations from the event went to the ADA to help raise awareness about the disease.
