Jazz Band members make the audience groove during Community TIme.

On a warm spring day, the Jazz Band was out in full force. The band gave a performance last Wednesday afternoon in the Ferroggiaro quad, during the usual Community Time barbeque. The Jazz Band also gave a concert the previous Thursday evening in the Soda Center. The concert in the quad allowed the Jazz Band to gain a new audience, as they were able to perform for people who were in the area and may have not been exposed to their music. The band performed a variety of standard jazz pieces, most of which were up-tempo and high-energy.

Director John Maltester made a point of announcing who the soloists would be before each piece, and acknowledging the dedication of the entire band. The saxophone section dominated for most of the performances, but all of the musicians, including the trumpets, trombone, guitarist, pianist, bass, and drummer performed with skill. Despite the fact that the atmosphere was one in which people could listen to the music while doing other activities, the music and even the director's announcements could be well heard in the quad. While outdoor concerts may not work as well for other student recitals like classical performances, it is likely the jazz band will try this format again in the future.
