While freshmen moved on campus and construction workers labored in the heat, The Collegian's new senior staff brushed up on ethics and editing.
The campus newspaper's annual summer orientation established goals and procedures for the upcoming year. It also gave the senior staff - which consists of editors and photographers - a chance to work together for the first time.
Stefanie Wang '10, the incoming Editor in Chief, said her "goal is to improve the paper and to always provide quality news and entertainment for the campus." Wang, who has been with the paper since her freshmen year, hopes that in her new leadership role she will "encourage students to become more involved with The Collegian and the Saint Mary's community."
Wang and Managing Editor Jennifer Kennedy '10 led the week-long orientation, which included presentations on each section of the paper, ethical journalism, and interviewing techniques. On the first day, the team members introduced themselves and explained why they wanted to write for the paper.
Samantha Dunbar '11, the new opinion editor, joined because she wanted to make an impact on campus. "Through the newspaper, I can directly reach out to my fellow peers. I am looking to make that connection with other students to make sure my time spent here is worthwhile," Dunbar said.
Kennedy signed on because the paper "gives us, the staff, experience for any field we may choose to go into. It is also a nice social break from school work."
The new editors have a wide variety of interests. Detour Editor Waioli Shannon '09, enjoys keeping herself fit by "swimming, bicycling and running every day." Shannon added that she is "an animal lover and currently [raises] a dog and two fish tanks of colorful guppies."
Near the end of the orientation the group discussed bias, libel prevention and investigative reporting. Former Editor in Chief Jonathan Morales '06 stopped by to discuss professionalism in a college paper and how The Collegian can help one seek a career in the newspaper business.
Some of the new senior staff intend to do just that. "After college I want to pursue a career in journalism," said Chief Copy Editor Caitlin Graveson '11, who explained that her interest in the subject increased while working with the paper. Kennedy added she wants to either "work for a non-profit, write a TV show or books, or possibly work for a magazine or newspaper." For Sports Editor Bryant West '11, the future is clear. "I hope to actually go into a sports journalism career in the future - and what better way to prepare for that then here," he said.
